Cities and the energy transition

Introduction

Cities are increasingly becoming the real game changers when it comes to addressing climate change and energy issues. They have transformed into actors of change and are now leading the transition towards a low-carbon future. By acting at a local level to solve unsustainable energy crises and climate change, cities manage to bypass national political disaccord, create partnership full of opportunities to accelerate climate action as well as facilitate access to climate finance for mitigation and resiliency. Cities are teaming up, creating coalitions, sharing intelligence and knowledge on the most advanced and innovative solutions to tackle climate-related risks. These strategic partnerships are rooted in strong concrete projects and initiatives which reflect cities’ ambitions, priorities and interests.

Friends of Europe acknowledges this evolving and prominent role of cities within the energy transition. Representing views from around the world, the main objective of this project is to highlight a set of concrete actions that are currently being implemented and which, if replicated and scaled up, could help accelerate the energy transition in compliance with the goals of the Paris Agreement.
