Aligning capital investment with the European Green Deal

About

The ecological transformation to a climate-resilient and net-zero future will, to a significant extent, be determined by activities in the financial sector.

Sustainable investment can be understood as a core pillar of the EU’s Green Deal. Since the introduction of the Sustainable Europe Investment Plan in January 2020, we have seen a cornucopia of regulations and incentives to support the alignment of investment with Europe’s climate targets.

The Europe of 2023 is vastly different to that of January 2020. Monetary policy, financial stability, inflation and other macroeconomic indicators have all been altered by the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russian invasion of Ukraine and shifting geo-economic and geopolitical tensions.

As the decade of decisive climate action enters the mid-point and Europe embarks on a mission of green reindustrialisation, it is crucial that the effort to align financial portfolios with the Green Deal remains a priority.

This roundtable dinner discussion marked the first engagement in a new project on sustainable finance, organised by Friends of Europe in partnership with the Laudes Foundation.
