About

January marked an important time for EU-US trade relations given the EU-US Trade and Technology council. On 19 February, we welcomed Cecilia Malmström, Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, former European Commissioner for Trade and Trustee of Friends of Europe, for an edition of our event series What the Chiefs Say.

In the context of the upcoming European Parliament and US Presidential elections, this conversation anticipated the impact of these electoral events on EU-US trade relations. In particular, Cecilia Malmström considered the EU’s strategy of ‘economic de-risking’ and examined the role of critical minerals in the future of the transatlantic relationship.

This conversation addressed points including:

  • The steps needed on both sides of the Atlantic to improve transparency concerns in the trading relationship.
  • The Transatlantic Initiative on Sustainable Trade (TIST) and joint efforts to support the green transition.
  • Ways in which digitalisation be harnessed to improve EU-US trade.
  • Cooperation (or not) in the World Trade Organization.

‘What the Chiefs Say’ events are informal and off-the-record roundtable debates that offer our members the exclusive opportunity to engage directly with a senior decision-maker from a European institution or government and get to the heart of a specific policy issue. These events are geared to be in tune with the interests of our members and are strategically linked to emerging trends within the EU sphere. Allowing us to identify opportunities and challenges in the European Commission’s agenda, these events discuss the ‘nitty gritty’ of policies affecting Europe in the next years and beyond.
