The ongoing conflict in Ukraine is not merely a regional concern but a decisive moment for European security and the broader international order. The “Cost of Inaction” study underscores the dire consequences of insufficient support for Ukraine, highlighting the risks of allowing aggressive non-democratic forces to undermine European stability.

As Ukraine defends its sovereignty against unprovoked aggression, the implications for Europe and democratic nations worldwide are profound. Ukraine’s struggle is a frontline defence against authoritarianism, so we must reinforce our commitment to supporting its fight for freedom.

Launched during our Ukraine Security Forum, the report details the geopolitical stakes involved, including the potential for expanded conflict, increased Russian influence, and the weakening of international norms. Economically, the fallout from failing to support Ukraine adequately could disrupt European integration and economic stability, given Ukraine’s role as a critical agricultural and energy supplier.

Give us weapons and we will fight, because now we are the only obstacle between you and them” – Maryna Ovcharenko, a university student from Kharkiv

Inaction or delayed support risks not only the destruction of a democratic state but also the erosion of the security architecture that has maintained peace in Europe post-World War II. The study calls for a robust response, advocating for immediate, sustained support to Ukraine. This includes military aid, economic assistance, and diplomatic efforts to isolate aggressors and reinforce international law.

This moment demands a clear-eyed recognition of the stakes at hand. Supporting Ukraine is not merely an act of solidarity but a necessary step to preserve our collective security and democratic values.

This engagement is part of Friends of Europe’s Ukraine Initiative.
