Ukraine's Independence Day: a history of resilience and triumph

Today, 24 August, marks Ukraine’s Independence Day, not just a date we honour, but a profound journey of resilience and courage. Ukraine’s history is woven with both tragedy and triumph. The horrific losses of the Holodomor, the devastation of World War II and the early 20th-century struggle for independence stand as stark reminders of the immense price Ukraine has paid for its sovereignty. The fall of the Soviet Union in 1991 gave Ukraine a new chance to stand as an independent nation and was a moment of immense pride and hope.

Still, Ukraine’s path to consolidating democracy and building a Western-oriented, prosperous state has been fraught with challenges. The Orange Revolution in 2004 and the Euromaidan Revolution in 2013-2014 were powerful affirmations of Ukraine’s commitment to democratic values and its Euro-Atlantic aspirations. Yet, these aspirations have been met with brutal opposition. Since 2014, Ukraine has been at war, facing the illegal annexation of Crimea and the occupation of parts of its eastern territories. The 2022 full-scale Russian invasion has aggravated the situation, bringing widespread destruction and suffering to the Ukrainian people.

Despite these challenges, Ukraine has shown unparalleled determination in defending not only its borders, but also the democratic values that Europe holds dear. The recent battlefield developments underscore the urgent need for increased international support. Civilians continue to pay the highest price, with relentless attacks on cities and infrastructure. The world must act decisively to enhance Ukraine’s air defence capabilities and ensure that it has the resources needed to withstand this aggression.

Ukraine’s fight is not just about its own survival; it is about defending the principles of freedom, democracy and the rule of law that underpin the EU and NATO. Ukraine’s rightful place is within these institutions and its integration is both a strategic necessity and a moral obligation. We call on the international community to intensify its support for Ukraine, recognising that the consequences of inaction are far-reaching.

The normalisation of this war would set a dangerous precedent, undermining international norms and emboldening aggressors everywhere. On this Independence Day, we reaffirm our unwavering support for Ukraine. The nation’s struggle is a testament to the power of resilience and the unbreakable spirit of a nation that refuses to yield.

As we celebrate Ukraine’s independence, we must also commit to ensuring that it remains a strong, sovereign state, fully integrated into the European and transatlantic communities.

Together, we can and must secure a future where peace and democracy prevail over tyranny and aggression. We stand with Ukraine and with the values it defends!
