Deutsche Welle | What can Ukraine expect from von der Leyen and the new EU leadership

Peace, Security & Defence

The re-election of these political figures is “good news for Ukraine,” agrees Jamie Shea, a senior researcher at the Friends of Europe think tank in Brussels. In his opinion, this fact indicates the “following of EU policy in support” of Kyiv. “All the more so since von der Leyen has already made it clear that she is going to strengthen defense issues and appoint a separate European Commissioner for these issues,” says Shi and adds that this will bring new investments in the EU’s defense industry, “which will have obvious advantages for Ukraine, because it will be involved in joint enterprises for the production of weapons.”
