“There is a significant increase in farmer activism, on a scale we haven’t seen before. It hasn’t come out of nowhere, I think it’s been simmering for some time,” the spokesman for Friends of Europe, a Brussels-based non-profit think tank specialising in European Union (EU) policies, told Lusa.

For Dharmendra Kanani, there is “a combination of factors” that explain this movement of protest, pointing to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 as the most significant, which led the EU to suspend customs duties on all products imported from Ukraine, allowing much cheaper cereals to flow into the EU bloc from that country, known as “the breadbasket of Europe”, as well as the green transition.
