In its Circular Economy Act — which is actually the national transposition of the EU’s waste framework directive — Germany introduced “tax incentives for the donation of products, especially food and textiles.” The EU could standardize solutions such as these. “We know the EU has no real tax competence, but it can and should create a framework for what governments can do to create incentives for businesses to reduce waste,” Dharmendra Kanani, chief operating officer and chief spokesperson at the EU policy think tank Friends of Europe told Marianne.
