Rethinking economics

Press Releases

Modern economics is based on our understanding of the laws of supply and demand, but are the theories that have supported economics up to the early part of this century truly sufficient? Are the fiscal and monetary levers currently available to governments enough?

In a world increasingly laden by unpredictability and crises, often in parallel with one another, the economic policy of the Europe Union and those of its member states have proven to be inadequate and unsustainable. We cannot achieve real social progress if we continue to rely on outdated measures of progress and economic models.

How can we rethink economics in order to ensure improved wealth redistribution, equity and social mobility? How do we tax for a modern world? How can we rebuild an economy that truly benefits everyone, while simultaneously maintaining responsible competition and intervention?

This week, Friends of Europe’s activities place particular focus on reinventing the economic rulebooks of the past and reimaging human-centred economic policies that truly benefit everyone. We are delighted to welcome and share the insights of Valdis Dombrovskis, European Commission Executive Vice-President for An Economy that Works for People; Daniel Daianu, President of the Romanian Fiscal Council, former member of the European Parliament, former Romanian finance minister and Trustee of Friends of Europe; Dimitris Kalavros-Gousiou, Co-Founder of Velocity Partners Venture Capital and Found.ation and 2023 European Young Leader (EYL40); Vanessa Cotterell, Project Manager at UNITEE; and the Laudes Foundation.

Stay tuned for updates and join the #RethinkingEconomics discussion.
