The Friends of Europe think tank says it is reassuring that the far right fell short of the anticipated results in the European Parliament (EP) elections, particularly in Portugal.

Speaking to Lusa, Dharmendra Kanani, spokesperson for Friends of Europe, said that it was “reassuring that, in Portugal, despite serious concerns about a shift towards the extreme right, in the end, [we] saw to a significant reduction in its share”, referring to the fact that Chega had elected two MEPs, half of what the polls indicated.

This result, he said, “remains an important sign that the Government party should not lose sight of in terms of the way it manages and cares for those who do not feel included or cared for and who, therefore, seek refuge in the far right. “, he added.
